This historic log cabin, once the location of a Forest Service river monitoring station, is a mix of antique camp and luxurious amenities all set in a botanical garden-like setting. Idle Rest is nestled at the base of Thrall Mountain (undeveloped Forest Service wilderness behind us), with Rapid Creek winding along 300+ feet of the property and has sweeping views of Norris Peak cliffs. The 3 acres of property are a local flora and fauna delight with numerous fruit bearing plants, local pine, spruce and deciduous trees, Autumn Flame slate, all types of bird, squirrels, chipmunks, marmots and entire herds of deer. The top level of our home has a 40' walk out deck that overlooks the creek and walks out into the large, two-tiered grassy yard. Stairs made of local slate and railroad bed ties take you down to the creek, shaded tree areas and a perfect fairy ring of trees and wildflowers. As of Summer 2018 we have Canadian Geese and Blue Heron nesting in the creek in front of the house, providing spectacular views of them flying up and down Rapid Creek.
Idle Rest is a natural haven, just 10 minutes from the shores of Pactola Lake and less from numerous hiking and ATV trails. Yet, we are on a winter-maintained school bus route and less than 1 mile from the quaint Johnson Siding General Store, Tavern, Fuel and Church. Being around 30 minutes from almost all of the big Black Hills attractions, you couldn't ask for a better setting during any weather season.
