WELCOME TO GREAT MACKEREL HOUSE
Great Mackerel House is one of only a few homes that sit on the edge of the sand at beautiful Great Mackerel Beach (10 steps to the beach). The property is a short public ferry, private boat or water taxi ride from Palm Beach and is only a 1-minute flat stroll from the public wharf. Open the sliding doors, breath in the fresh air and enjoy all that this idyllic location has to offer including a long stretch of sandy beach, the Ku-ring-gai National Park and views across the water to the iconic Barrenjoey Lighthouse.
The property can comfortably accomodate up to 12 guests (extra guest charges after 6 guests apply). The property also has 3 decks, and there is a huge backyard with a sleeping/games Pavilion and a 3rd bathroom.
The large entertaining area in the enclosed back yard includes a bbq, pizza oven, 2 drinks fridges, fire pit, golf driving range (bring your own clubs and balls) and an outdoor shower and bathroom.

SLEEPING & BATHROOMS
Great Mackerel House has a total of 4 king bedrooms, Two have views of the beach and ocean and two have garden views. The Games Pavilion is seperate to the main house and sits in the large enclosed rear garden. The Pavilion sleeps 4 with a king bed and 2 singles. It also includes a pool table which doubles as a a ping pong table, a TV and a 1980's arcade style pac man game. The all new main bathroom has a large bath with shower above, the second bathroom (also new) comprises a toilet with hand basin and the third is an outdoor bathroom with shower opposite the Pavilion.
All bedding and towels are supplied with the exception of beach towels (all sheets and pillow cases are pure linen by Sheridan).
We harvest all of our water from the sky and employ a range of filters to ensure the water is as pure as possible for drinking.
KITCHEN, DINING & LIVING AREAS
The open plan kitchen and living area opens out onto the front deck and the golden sands of Great Mackerel Beach (10 steps to the beach).
The kitchen is stocked with all the basics for entertaining and cooking from flour and salt through to a myriad of spices and condiments. We also provide top quality cookware, chef's knives and both an ISOMAC coffee machine and Nespresso machine.
We will send you a full list of what is provided with our Welcome Email once you have booked the property. If there is something special you think you may need for your cooking and entertaining plans please don't hesitate to ask.
The dining table seats up to 12 and there are also large tables on the front and rear decks. There is a large new Sub-zero fridge-freezer and Ilve cooker in the kitchen and a 3-burner bbq, 2 bar fridges and pizza oven on the rear deck next to the kitchen.
The property also has high speed internet, a work area with a desk and views of the beach and a large laundry with washer and dryer.
ACCESS & WHAT TO BRING
Great Mackerel Beach is only 43 km from the Sydney CBD and situated on the western shores of the Pittwater in the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park.
It’s a tranquil slice of unspoilt paradise and only accessed by the quaint old wooden public ferry, the Myra, from Palm Beach Wharf, private boat or water taxi. The wharf is situated across the street from Barrenjoey House and there is a paid parking lot or free parking along Barrenjoey Road.
While the kitchen has all the basics, all of your supplies (including fire wood for the fire pit and pizza oven) for your holiday must brought in with you.
Importantly, Great Mackerel House is only a 1-minute stroll from the public jetty. Your luggage and supplies can be carried in by hand or our 4-wheeled Gorilla trolley.
Avalon is a 7 minute drive from Palm Beach and has a Woolworths, Vintage Cellars, French Bakery, Oceana Seafood Traders and Avalon Village Meats. Mona Vale is about 15 mins and has Coles, Woolworths, Aldi, Harris Farms, Dan Murphys and various bakeries, butcheries, fish and sushi shops and a Flanagans for organic fruit, vegetables and groceries. Many of the service stations sell fire wood for the fire pit and pizza oven.
Our cleaners also offer a Concierge Service so that you can order groceries, drinks, firewood or packaged meals from Jonahs etc and all will be delivered to the house ready for your arrival or during your stay (details will be sent once you make a reservation).
SANDY BEACH IDEAL FOR SWIMMING & OTHER WATER ACTIVITIES
The beach at Great Mackerel House is a 750m long stretch of beautiful golden sand. The house and beach face east with views across the water to the iconic Barrenjoey Lighthouse at Palm Beach.
The ocean water is sublime and ideal for swimming, diving and most other water activities. You can also fish from the jetty and the beach. The property comes with a stand up paddle board, 2 canoes, 2 kayaks, beach fishing gear, beach chairs and beach umbrellas. Please note: you will need to bring your own, fishing hooks, bait, beach towels and fire wood.
KU-RING-GAI CHASE NATIONAL PARK
Great Mackerel Beach is surrounded by the Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park. There are numerous walking trails through the park including the 9.2 km (return) Great Mackerel to The Basin walk, the 4.4 km Aboriginal Heritage walk and 8.6 km Great Mackerel Beach to West Head loop.
All the walks offer spectacular views over the Pittwater, the Barrenjoey Lighthouse and Lion Island. There is also a beautiful waterfall, Aboriginal rock art and engravings and an abundance of wild life including wallabies, lyre birds and bush turkeys.
NEARBY RESTAURANTS
There are several great restaurants in Palm Beach including the Jonah's, Barrenjoey House and Dunes. There are also numerous cafes and restaurants in Avalon, Newport (including Bert's at the Newport Arms) and Mona Vale.
CCTV CAMERAS - The outside areas of Culburra House are monitored by CCTV cameras. Footage will never be shared with any outside party unless required by law.
