Maryport is a quaint harbour town, established nearly 2000 years ago when the Romans came to Britain. It has an unexcavated Roman fort next to the superb Senhouse Roman Museum. Modern Maryport is based on a planned Georgian town and boasts a deep-water harbour and modern marina, an Art Gallery and a refurbished Maritime Museum, as well as other visitor attractions. The award-winning Lake District Coast Aquarium with its popular café is only a two-minute walk away.

Beyond Cockermouth, the Solway Plain opens out with pretty shore-line villages like Bowness, Port Carlisle and Burgh by Sands. The City of Carlisle, with its ancient castle and cathedral, is the gateway to Hadrian's Wall and to Scotland. All-in-all, a historic area, with beautiful scenery.
