For excursions we recommend the enchanting castles of Duino, where Rilke wrote his famous elegies, and Miramare. Within easy reach is also the historically and culturally interesting city of Trieste, with a charming old town and atmospheric Art Nouveau cafes, certainly worth a day trip.
