The center of this green, spatial and outstretched inland meadow is the city of Benkovac whose history began with the construction of Benković Castle in the 15th century. This fortress dominates the Benkovac valley which is worth locating. Benkovac winemakers will gladly familiarize you with the 2000-year-old tradition of grapevine cultivation. Except for wine and the raising of numerous agricultural culture, this area can actually boast an assortment of 50 types of edible figs! As you might have guessed, gastronomic enjoyment is guaranteed, whether you choose to stay at one of our hospitable rural households or simply drop by for lunch. A special attraction is the Benkovac fair which more than a hundred years on the tenth of every month, and which offers you a true to-life experience of the people and customs of this area, with authentic products and food from this part of the country, which are still hand-made in a natural way. An exceptional place to visit is the Mausoleum of the Meštrović family, built in the form of a gravesite chapel honoring St. Jelena of the Crusaders. Located in the center of Roman Catholic cemetery in Benkovac, it represents one of the most complete architectural pieces of sculptor Ivan Rendić and certainly one of the best Secessionist creations in the entire Zadar region.
